Welcome to the home page for the book Teaching Martial Arts: and the instructor training course that goes with it.
There are many ways to run a school and many different types of instructors and business people out there.
However, all great schools have one thing in common.
Great Instructors.
Training instructors is one of the most important tasks of any martial arts school owner. Personally, I love teaching. I live for the relationships with the students and seeing them progress. But after owning my own school for a few years I realized that the future quality of life for me and my family depended on one thing more than others: How well could I train my top students to be good teachers?
Sample Lessons (Lesson 10: Student Retention) or (Lesson 38: The Ear)
If you're not sure if this is something that you need, ask yourself:
Do you really want to work until 9 pm every night for the rest of your life?
Do you want to provide career opportunities for your best and most loyal students?
How easy would it be for you walk away from your school for two weeks, whether for a vacation or international training trip?
You could try to 'reinvent the wheel' and make your own course, but it took us hundreds of hours over nearly three years to amass and distill the knowledge for this one. How much is your time worth? You could also purchase another instructor training course, (believe me, I've done it) but you'd almost certainly pay more and get less. The important concepts are likely already explained here.
The program makes you money. Once you receive the course, you can then charge your students for inclusion into the class. Or, you can include it as a reason to upgrade to a black belt or leadership club. Personally, we don't charge our instructor trainees for the class, but we do sell them the book. Even this is enough to recoup your initial investment. (Go to Order Page)
But don't just take my word for it. Listen to what the following very smart people have to say:
Dr. Chinedum Osuji is a professor at Yale University, and a Taekwondo Master and Olympian. Here's what he had to say about it:
"Teaching Martial Arts" by Bill Pottle provides a rare and invaluably comprehensive guide to martial arts instruction that will be appreciated by experienced practitioners of many different forms. The book covers a fantastic array of topics ranging from philosophy and learning styles to Myers-Briggs indicators, classroom management and physiology, along with a large and creative collection of drills for everything from warming up to training for top-level competition. A successful competitor, coach and instructor, Master Pottle frames a considerable body of knowledge in an approachable, easy to read manner that brings the salient features into sharp focus. This book encourages you to see things in their totality. It will change the way you think about martial arts instruction.
Master Dan Chuang is an instructor at CW Boston and the head of the MIT Taekwondo Team. He's been awarded the Collegiate Coach of the Year Award multiple times. He also raved about the book:
Master Bill Pottle is life-long martial artist who is committed to excellence in both the instruction and practice of martial arts. Through this book, he has set down both his philosophy of instruction as well as a comprehensive list of drills and concepts that are sure to be useful to martial arts teachers everywhere.
Dr. Steve Schwager, a black belt and Cornell University Professor believes: "The best decisions are based on the best information." That's why he heartily endorses Teaching Martial Arts. He continues:
This book contains a wide range of valuable information about teaching martial arts effectively. Both practical and conceptual topics are covered. This is vital, because it’s usually helpful to know both what to do (and not to do) and why. Much of the book’s material is not found in other books about either martial arts or teaching. The contents are organized well, packaged into small units that can be managed easily by instructor trainees. The references are useful sources of more specialized information. The best way to deal with problems is to avoid them; the best way to deal with opportunities is to seek and embrace them. This book will help martial arts instructors to anticipate and deal with both.
... but the Teaching Martial Arts book is only part of the story!
